Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic has 'nothing to prove' on return to Newcastle, says ex-boss Rafa Benitez

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez says Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has nothing to prove when he returns to his former club this weekend.

The Serbian forward left Newcastle in January to join Fulham, initially on a six-month loan deal, before moving permanently during the summer after helping the west London side to promotion.

Mitrovic struggled for form and with disciplinary issues during his time under Benitez, and was rarely first choice under the Spanish boss.

The 24-year-old heads back to St James' Park on Saturday as the main man for a Fulham side who sit bottom of the Premier League, but ahead of the reunion Benitiez said: "I don't think he has to prove anything because he is doing well.

Mitrovic has gone four league games without a goal

"He is playing well, scoring goals for them. He is working very hard, so I think he will be happy at the moment.

"He is a good player, we knew that before, and I wish him all the best after this game.

"I think he will give everything on the pitch because that is his style of play, and hopefully we can keep him quiet."
