Fulham defender Joachim Andersen has one match ban overturned after controversial Newcastle red card

Fulham defender Joachim Andersen has had his one match suspension overturned after lodging a successful claim of 'wrongful dismissal'.

The Denmark international was shown a straight red card during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Newcastle United after he hauled down Magpies forward Callum Wilson in the penalty area.

Referee Graham Scott consulted the on-pitch VAR monitor and decided the foul was worthy of a dismissal for preventing an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

It was a decision that courted controversy, though, with Match of the Day host and former England forward Gary Lineker accusing Wilson of diving, while Watford captain Troy Deeney was also critical of Wilson's theatrics.

The 28-year-old got up to tuck away the spot-kick as the Magpies rescued a point from behind but while Andersen wasn't spared of punishment at St James' Park, he will now be available for the Boxing Day visit of Southampton at Craven Cottage.

"An independent Regulatory Commission has removed Joachim Andersen’s one-match suspension following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal," an FA spokesperson confirmed.

"The Fulham FC defender was dismissed for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity during a Premier League match against Newcastle United FC on Saturday [19/12/20]."
