Fulham and West Brom lament VAR decisions as they miss chance to reel Newcastle further in

Fulham boss Scott Parker and West Brom manager Sam Allardyce were left to rue VAR calls as their sides missed the chance to reel Newcastle further into relegation trouble.

Parker's side were beaten 1-0 at home to Tottenham on Thursday evening thanks to an own goal from Tosin Adarabioyo.

However, Fulham looked to have equalised when Josh Maja put the ball in the back of the net, only for it to be ruled out by VAR.

The goal was reviewed for a handball by Mario Lemina in the build-up and, with the ball judged to have hit the midfielder's arm before falling to Maja, the effort was disallowed.

It means Newcastle remain three points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone heading into a critical weekend at the bottom of the Premier League.

MATT RITCHIE AND STEVE BRUCE TRAINING GROUND CLAIMS - WHAT NOW FOR NEWCASTLE UNITED?

"First half I thought we started the game well but I didn't feel we stamped our mark on the game as we wanted, we didn't take the game to them," Parker told Football.London.

"In the second half I felt we did, the way we moved the ball and we were really dynamic. We should have got something out of the game.

"I don't see what else he [Lemina] can do. The ball has hit him. The referee is just sticking to the law but you'd like to see some common sense. VAR looked at it as well.

"We're trying to make the game so pure and so sterile. We want to see the game as fans full of goals and excitement. VAR has taken that out of the game.

"You don't celebrate because you're worried it will be ruled out. It's taken the joy out of the game."

Allardyce was left to rue a similar decision as West Brom were beaten 1-0 by Everton at the Hawthorns.

Richarlison nodded the Toffees in front but Mbaye Diagne's stoppage-time goal was ruled out for offside as Allardyce's side remained second bottom, nine points adrift of Newcastle.

"We should have had all three points really," Allardyce said.

“We could have scored a goal in the first minute.

“After Everton scored, we scored a great goal but unfortunately it gets ruled out.

“I think Mbaye’s big toe was offside and that’s the situation with VAR. It’s difficult to take. Just another couple of millimetres further back and we are coming in at 1-1 and we’d be delighted with the point and the performance.

“No points is not what we’re looking for. We can take heart from the performance and we can look at the lads and say well done, but it’s all about points for us.

“It’s another game gone by where we are further away from fourth from bottom because we’ve now got one less game.

“That defensive solidarity is looking better and better, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to keep another clean sheet tonight.

“I can’t criticise the players for what they have done today.

“They’ve given everything they possibly could have done, and a bit more.”

Newcastle travel to the Hawthorns on Sunday to take on West Brom in a crucial clash at the bottom of the Premier League table.
