Seventh-dan shogi player Sota Fujii was defeated by a fourth-dan player in the first round of the 68th NHK Cup TV Shogi Tournament that was aired on Sunday.
Fujii, 15, was entered directly into the main tournament as his strong results in the previous year exempted him from competing in the preliminary tournament.
However, Fujii failed to defeat Kenji Imaizumi, 45, in his first match. As of Sunday, he has 10 wins and three losses this fiscal year.
"Although the situation was advantageous, I took the wrong course in the final phase. Decision-making remains a challenge for me," he told reporters after the match.
