Fugitive wanted over street shooting still in Amsterdam two months after arrest

A fugitive who is wanted in relation to a shooting is still in custody in Amsterdam two months after his arrest.

Jamie Rothwell, 34, was held after police stopped a taxi in the Dutch capital on December 14 last year.

Rothwell was wanted by Cheshire Police in relation to a shooting in Warrington which left a 55-year-old man with life changing injuries.

Four gunshots were heard when a man was shot on Poplars Avenue on the night of April 24 last year. The 55-year-old victim suffered a serious leg wound.

Cheshire Police have now confirmed to the ECHO that Rothwell is still in custody in Amsterdam, two months after his initial arrest.

A spokesperson said the force was still intent on bringing Rothwell back to the UK. They said: "Extradition proceedings are ongoing."

Rothwell, from Salford, was wanted by detectives for nine alleged offences including two counts of conspiring to possess firearms with intent to endanger life, two counts of conspiring to commit grievous bodily harm with intent and conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin.

The allegations against Rothwell also include conspiracy to supply ketamine and cannabis, and acquiring criminal property.

Rothwell was held days after Cheshire Police secured an International Arrest Warrant.

Dutch police made the actual arrest after stopping a taxi in central Amsterdam.

Speaking last year, senior officers welcomed the speed and efficiency of Rothwell's arrest.

Rob Hickinbottom, head of the NCA National Firearms Targeting Centre, said: “Any arrest of a fugitive over extremely serious allegations is a great result.

“But the speed of this successful operation is testament to what the NCA – leading the UK’s fight against serious organised crime – and our partners at home and abroad can achieve.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Evans, from Cheshire Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: “Following an international search, he was located and detained within days of us securing the European Arrest Warrant.

“This sends a clear message that we will relentlessly pursue those suspected of being involved in organised crime who travel abroad in the hope that it puts them out of the reach of UK law enforcement.

“We have worked closely with, and been supported by, the NCA, Greater Manchester Police and Dutch partners and would like to thank colleagues for all of their assistance in ensuring he faces justice.”
