A fugitive who has been on the run for three years since a teenager was shot dead in the city has been arrested over a 'violent robbery' in Spain, the ECHO can exclusively reveal.
Detectives are hunting for the killer of 18-year-old Yusuf Sonko who was shot once in the head behind Lodge Lane shops in Toxteth at the start of June, 2017.
Four weeks after the murder, police appealed for help to track down Jason Curry, who they were keen to speak to about the murder.
The ECHO can now confirm Curry, aged in his mid 20s, has been apprehended on the Costa Del Sol, in recent days.
It is understood the Liverpool man was detained in connection with a violent robbery in the principality of Mijas.
The Guardia Civil is leading the investigation, and communication has taken place between them and detectives on Merseyside.
Merseyside Police have previously appealed for information regarding the whereabouts of Jason Curry who the force said they believe has "vital information in relation to the murder of Yusuf Sonko".
The ECHO understands the investigation and prosecution in Spain will take prominence before detectives in Liverpool could interview him about the killing on Tagus Street, at 8.30pm on Friday, June 2, 2017.
Yusuf was chatting with friends near Lodge Lane when a gunman opened fire on the group.
The teenager suffered a gunshot wound to his head which proved fatal.
A number of people have been arrested in connection with the killing, but nobody has been charged.
The shooter was carrying a 9mm handgun and past reports suggested the gunman was on a pushbike and fired the self-loading pistol five times, at a group of people, including Yusuf.
Firearm casings and two rounds of ammunition were found at the scene.
Curry, who comes from Toxteth, also has connections to North Wales, particularly Wrexham, and Cumbria.

Yusuf's heartbroken parents have previously appealed for the "wall of silence" surrounding his death to be brought down.
In an open letter, his parents Khadija and Papice Sonko said: "Our son, Yusuf, was brutally murdered, shot in the head on June 2, 2017 on Lodge Lane, a busy street, with many people there witnessing what happened on that fateful evening.
"No one from our community, not his friends, no mother, sister, brother or father has yet had the courage to come forward, to give evidence, to bring the person who killed my boy to justice.
"We are writing this letter to appeal to you, to our community members, to come forward with any information to bring the killer of Yusuf to face justice.
"We are appealing to you, please help us. Please come forward with information. Our community must break this wall of silence.
"It just takes one person to do the right thing.
"Put yourselves in our position, what would you want if it was your child or family member that was killed?
"Please come forward, speak to the police and please bring us some peace."
A £20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for Yusuf’s death remains in place.
