Fugitive paedophile hid for years in makeshift bunker before being found by hunter

A paedophile fugitive hid for more than three years in a makeshift bunker powered by solar panels and a pedal generator.

Jeremiah Button, who fled weeks before he was due to stand trial for child sexual assault and pornography charges in 2016, was found when a hunter stumbled on his lair in Wisconsin last week.

Button, 44, had been out on a £20,000 cash bond for about 18 months when he vanished.

Thomas Nelson is a frequent hunter in the area and several months ago he found a bunker with a log door carved into an embankment.

He said: “I followed the brush marks, I saw the door. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.”

But he returned on August 9 and went inside, discovering Button lying on his bed and ran from the bunker before calling police.

A 20-minute stand-off ensued before Button surrendered.

Button is back in custody and is due back in court for a pre-trial conference on September 16.
