Fugitive from Manchester on the run for almost two years arrested in Spain after armed police swoop

A fugitive wanted by Greater Manchester Police for almost two years has been captured and arrested in Spain, the Manchester Evening News can reveal.

Police confirmed he's been wanted on recall to prison since August, 2018.

The M.E.N. understands the man is from the north Manchester area.

He's said to have breached the terms of his release from prison on licence.

GMP confirmed the 25-year-old remained in custody in Spain awaiting extradition back to the UK.

No date has been given.

Reports in Spain claimed the man first evaded capture in April.

He is said to have escaped Spain's Guardia Civil officers by clambering over rooftops in the area of Puerto Lumbreras, a municipality of Murcia.

The National Crime Agency confirmed to the M.E.N. they subsequently assisted in 'sourcing' the man's location after he fled.

Armed police then tracked him down to Llano del Espino in Albox, a municipality in the province of Almeria, on April 27 and he was arrested.

"Suddenly the Guardia Civil turned up with guns and binoculars to stake him out from the other side of the valley," one neighbour, who asked to remain nameless, said.

"We had no idea a wanted criminal was living out here."

Another neighbour said she had 'never laid eyes on him' and was 'shocked' when the police turned up outside her house.

The man, who the M.E.N. isn't naming, is currently being held at Madrid's Court of Instruction.

A spokesperson for Madrid's High Courts of Justice said an extradition hearing had been held and he's due to be flown back to the UK as a result.

The M.E.N. understands coronavirus has hampered the process.

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil in Murcia claimed the man had acquired residency using a name with the initials LWJ.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the arrest and extradition process in a statement:

GMP said: "A 25-year-old man from Manchester wanted on recall to prison since August 2018 for breaching the terms of his licence has been arrested.

"He remains in custody in Spain awaiting extradition back to the UK."

The force gave no further details.

The National Crime Agency said it was a Greater Manchester Police operation and couldn't comment further.
