Fuerteventura raises Covid alert level after cases surge by 133 per cent

The Covid-19 alert level has been raised after case numbers surged by 133 per cent on a holiday island popular with UK holidaymakers.

The Canary island of Fuerteventura is a favourite winter sun destination for thousands of British visitors - but Covid restrictions will be toughened from Monday.

Health alert levels will go up the level two - or amber - for a 10-day period because infections rose by 133 per cent between November 3-9 from 30 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 70.2.

Other islands in the Canaries remain at the lowest alert level.

Among the new Fuerteventura rules are limits the number of people from different households who can meet and reduced capacity at indoor markets. Most bars and restaurants must close by 2am, while nightlife capacity is restricted. Public transport is restricted to 50 per cent of capacity.

Masks must also be worn by adults and children over the age of six in enclosed public spaces, except when eating or drinking, and outdoors where it is not possible to maintain social distancing of 1.5m. Masks are not mandatory for the disabled or people suffering from a respiratory condition.

The Canaries health ministry said the rising levels in Fuerteventura coincided with “the general relaxation” of preventive measures such as mask-wearing, physical distance, ventilation and hand washing “despite the fact that they have amply demonstrated their effectiveness”.

All major UK tour operators and airlines operate regular services and holidays to the island, including TUI, easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair.

There are no new restrictions on entry to Fuerteventura. However, visitors from the UK must complete a Spanish Government Health Control Form and have proof of a negative Covid-19 test or be fully-vaccinated.
