Fuel thieves are claimed to be using fake number plates to steal from garages across Swansea Bay

Fuel thieves are claimed to be using fake number plates to steal from filling stations in south west Wales.

Garages in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot have been targeted within the last few weeks. They claim the thieves are filling up containers hidden in the back seats and boots of their cars.

A worker at one of the filling stations targeted multiple times claimed fake number plates were being used so the vehicles could not be traced.

The man, who did not want to be named, said thieves had been seen filling fuel containers through the windows and boots of the vehicles, before getting back in and driving away.

Video and stills provided by the garage to WalesOnline show vehicles parked at the pumps, before they are immediately driven away.

The garage worker said of the thefts: "They are bringing containers in the boot or back seats and filling them.

"They are doing it in the afternoon sometimes and they are very cool and calm.

"I know of incidents in Mumbles, Neath and Gower within the last couple of weeks.

"We have checked the plates and they are fake.

"The cashiers are very stressed about it, especially as it is happening in broad daylight. It's very scary.

"There are customers coming in getting annoyed too because if someone is blocking our view we have been announcing over the tannoy for them to move."

South Wales Police confirmed it had received multiple reports of fuel being stolen from filling stations.

A spokesman said: "Police are investigating reports of the theft of fuel from filling stations in the Neath and Swansea areas."

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference number 1900346637.
