Fuel spillage on Coast Road following two-vehicle crash sparked fire fears

Emergency services were called to a two-car crash on a Coast Road slip road after fears one of the vehicles was on fire.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics were called to the collision which happened at the junction of Derby Gardens and the A1058 entry slip road at Wallsend.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene just after 7.20pm on Friday after fears that one of the cars had caught fire.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We got the call at 7.23pm and two appliances were dispatched to Derby Gardens at the junction with the A1058.

"It was initially thought that a vehicle was on fire but it was leaking fuel."

Spilt fuel from the car and debris which had spilled across the road had to be cleared up before the entry road onto the westbound side of the carriageway could fully reopen.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "It was thought that one of the vehicles was on fire."

They added that those involved had only suffered "slight injuries" and had exchanged insurance details.

The road was partially closed while the debris was cleared and it is thought emergency services left the scene after around an hour.
