Fuel crisis sparks SPFL lower league concerns as English clubs face postponements due to panic buying

Non-league football in England is having to face up to widespread fixture postponements due to the current fuel crisis.

Clubs in the Isthmian League - in the seventh and eighth tiers of the pyramid down south - have been given the temporary right to get a match called off if they claim problems obtaining fuel for travelling to the ground.

And it sets something of a precedent in UK football if Scottish clubs in the lower reaches of the SPFL or further down the pyramid in divisions such as the Highland League or Lowland League are having difficulty getting to games.

The shortage stems from a lack of HGV drivers to deliver petrol and diesel to stations across the UK.

It caused huge queues across the country as motorists rushed to panic buy fuel that was already in short supply.

A survey of independent petrol stations across Britain indicated at least half have run dry with the higher estimate at 85 per cent.

Clubs needing to undertake gruelling away days with small budgets may face difficulties.

Wick Academy, for example, face a 10-hour round trip to Bo'ness United in their rescheduled Scottish Cup tie on Tuesday night.
