As we creep closer to the final episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty, tensions are reaching an all-time high. After all, it’s the love story of our generation — Gen Z’s Ross and Rachel, if you will — and fans everywhere are desperate to find out which Fisher brother, Belly (Lola Tung), will settle down with for good.
With less than a few episodes to go, the audience seems to be getting sick of both her romantic options — and Belly herself. But if you ask me, all of this heartache could’ve been avoided if Belly just listened to her mother, Laurel (Jackie Chung).
Let me explain… but beware, there are some spoilers for season three below.

A few months ago, I was asked to interview the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty to promote the new season. Although I hadn’t seen the show before, I was excited and quickly turned in. After all, I’m a professional who wasn’t going to fuck up an interview with piss poor performance just because I hadn’t done my research.
Sometimes in this scenario, I’ll stop watching a show once I get the vibe and understand what’s going on. But this time, even after the interview was well and truly done, I couldn’t stop watching. In fact, I was completely absorbed by the series, quickly binging the whole thing.
Now, I’m officially up to date with the rest of the fans, and I have many, many thoughts. The main one, though? Belly should’ve just listened to her mother.
Throughout the series, Laurel isn’t like the regular mums you see on television. She’s not controlling, nor is she desperately trying to be cool. Instead, she’s truly a wonderful role model for her kids who not only cares for them deeply but respects them enough to let them make their own choices and mistakes.
Laurel has always followed the beat of her own drum and modelled the same for her kids. From getting a divorce with Belly’s father in the hopes of finding a deeper love, to modelling the importance of life-long friendships with Sussanah (Rachel Blanchard), she navigates life with an innate sense of pragmatism.
Plus, when Belly went to college, she encouraged her to explore romantically and not be too wrapped up in Jeremiah to have the exciting life experiences that college has to offer, like she did.
Pretty great advice, don’t you think?

When Belly announced her engagement to Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), it was Laurel who was the voice of reason and asked the question everyone with a developed frontal lobe was thinking as they watched the episode unfold.
“This is insane, delusional,” said Laurel.
“If you want to take the next step, move in together… foster a cat. Why rush to get married?”
The show makes it clear that Laurel isn’t just being a hater — she just doesn’t want Belly to make the same mistake she did by marrying someone young and becoming a wife before she even knows herself.
As it stands, Belly has two options. She can follow through with her marriage to her fratboy boyfriend Jeremiah, or she can take a risk and follow her heart with Conrad (Christopher Briney).
While I definitely skew into team Conrad territory, I can’t help but think that everyone’s life would be better off if Belly listened to her mum and had some time as a single broad before being locked down and saying yes to the world’s tiniest engagement ring.
But hey, what do I know? I guess all we can do is tune in for the next few weeks until we finally know how this big ol’ doozy of a love triangle will work out.
