FTSE weathers week of heavy swings

It's becoming the norm: another volatile week on the markets. But despite that, the leading index has surprisingly ended today almost unchanged since its opening on Monday.

The FTSE 100 dropped 91.7 points to 5787.6 today, compared to its 5784 close a week ago. This bare fact however hides the hefty swings during the past five trading days, including daily losses of 29, 76 and 91 points and a 202 point gain.

The banks have been hard hit again today, with Alliance & Leicester closing 18.5 points lower at 525p after that Citigroup downgrade. Bradford & Bingley continued its slump after this week's write-offs, closing 10.25p lower at 176.25p.

The bus and rail group's were hit this morning by a profit warning from Go-Ahead and never recovered. Go-Ahead lost 395p to £18.40, FirstGroup 40.5p to 605.5p, Stagecoach 23.75p to 222.5p, National Express 64p to £10.63 and Arriva 32.5p to 664p.
