FSU plans on making Jim Harbaugh's Orange Bowl wish come true

Florida State is making Jim Harbaugh's wish come true.

But the Michigan coach might have to be careful for what he wishes for.

The Seminoles plan on sending Osceola and Renegade to perform their pregame ritual before No. 11 FSU (9-3) faces No. 6 Michigan (10-2) in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

It will be Renegade's first appearance in a bowl game in three years, since representing the Seminoles at the 2013 national championship game.

"We already made the decision they were coming. We've been working on it for a while," FSU assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions Jason Dennard said Thursday.

"Osceola and Renegade are synonymous with Florida State. We try to make it work any chance we get. It's a packaged deal."

Harbaugh expressed an affinity for Florida State's pregame tradition during a news conference with Jimbo Fisher at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood on Wednesday.

Harbaugh said he has always wanted to visit FSU's Doak Campbell Stadium to witness the atmosphere, but will gladly settle for Osceola and Renegade planting the spear midfield in Hard Rock Stadium before the Orange Bowl.

"That is one of the coolest things," Harbaugh said describing college football traditions like Florida State's. "A lot of teams have cool things ... that is right up there with one of the coolest things."

Renegade, an Appaloosa horse, does not travel for road games during the regular season, but does make appearances for most neutral-site games and bowl games, Dennard said.

It was present at FSU's Orange Bowl win against Northern Illinois in 2013, the 2013 national championship game in Pasadena, Calif., and the 2016 season opener against Ole Miss at Camping World Stadium. The Seminoles won all three games.

The last two absences have coincidentally come in FSU's last two bowl defeats.

The Seminoles planned on having Renegade travel to the national championship game in Dallas if they beat Oregon in the semifinals of the 2014 College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

FSU ended the 2015 season with a loss to Houston in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta's Georgia Dome, where the FieldTurf surface was not ideal for Renegade to run on.

The Seminoles are still deciding whether Renegade will travel to the New Atlanta Stadium for FSU's 2017 season opener against Alabama.

"There are only a handful of times we haven't been able to bring them with us," Dennard said, "but we try everything in our power to make it happen."

Along with hoping to break a two-game bowl streak, FSU hopes to avoid being the first team in school history to lose three consecutive bowl games.

Osceola and Renegade's presence could help the Seminoles end this season on a high note.
