FSG have been told to make a 'huge' statement' this summer by bringing Raphael Varane to Liverpool by former Reds defender Glen Johnson.
Jurgen Klopp 's side have struggled this season after seeing a plethora of injuries decimate their efforts to defend the Premier League title, and are at risk of failing to qualify for next season's Champions League as a result.
However, that hasn't stopped them being linked with some of the planet's best players, including Real Madrid defender Varane.
The World Cup winner is out of contract in 2022 and reports suggest the La Liga giants would prefer to cash in on the France international this summer than risk losing him for free.
And with the majority of Liverpoo l's injuries coming in defence, Johnson has urged Reds owners FSG to back Klopp in the transfer window by signing Varane.
"Liverpool must back Klopp in the transfer market and sign top players like Varane," he told CheltenhamGuides. "I think they will back Klopp this summer.
"I think they’ll be looking to get three or four new players in and freshen it up with new faces and younger legs, hungry players too. It doesn’t matter if you win the league or not, every team has to strengthen because if they don’t everyone else will. It’s important that the board back him and let him buy two or three players.
"When a big player like Varane walk through the door, someone who has been there and done it, it gives everybody a lift. If you’re an away team and you arrive at Anfield to see Van Dijk and Varane at the back, you’re going to think ‘how are we meant to score against these two?’, so that will be a huge statement if they can make these sort of signings."
He continued: "If Liverpool miss out on the top four they’re still a massive attraction. If they miss out on the top four this season then they won’t miss out on it again next year.
"A top player would still want to go to Liverpool as they’re still a club in a fantastic position, they’ve just gone off the boil for the last couple of months, so they won’t struggle to attract the big names at all."
However, Johnson admits he expects one of the Reds' front three to leave the club this summer.
Mohamed Salah continues to shine for Klopp's side and scored his 25th goal of the season against RB Leipzig, but speculation regarding his future and a potential move away continues.
Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have both faced scrutiny for below-par showings this campaign with the duo struggling to replicate their scoring returns of recent years.
And Johnson thinks it's time for Klopp to freshen up his attack at the expense of one of the trio as Liverpool look to challenge for the title again next year.
"Liverpool’s front three have got complacent and won’t all be there next season," he said. "I don’t think Liverpool will have the same front three next season.
"It’s been the same front three for a long time and sometimes a team just needs a fresh face to kickstart things. Liverpool’s front three knows if they’re fit then they will play, and sometimes that’s not a good thing.
"If they’re struggling or going through the motions because they know they’re going to play, it is not as good as if they are on their toes because they think somebody else is going to take their slot and that will raise their game."
He continued: "Sometimes a fresh face is needed and they’ve done everything they can at Liverpool so maybe one or two of them will want to go away and play somewhere in an easier league.
"I think Liverpool will want to play the same way, they won’t want to change much as they’ve got a devastating formula. They’ll look for similar personnel if they do want to replace anyone."
