They may have spent more than £900million on signing 70 players during their decade as “amazing” custodians of Liverpool Football Club.
But there is one capture that shines like a beacon brighter than any other business done by Fenway Sports Group since assuming control in October 2010.
After removing Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers from their positions as manager, the Reds owners coaxed Jurgen Klopp out of his sabbatical to become manager five years ago.
And while the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Alisson Becker have underlined the strength of Liverpool’s recruitment, former Reds captain Jamie Redknapp believes none have proven quite as pivotal as the arrival in the dugout.
“The most important signing by FSG has been Jurgen Klopp,” said Redknapp, now a pundit for Sky Sports.
“He has changed everything. He has given Liverpool a direction and belief, and he’s a good a manager as any – everybody would want to play for Jurgen Klopp.
“I’d imagine it was like this during the Bill Shankly days. Liverpool fans identify in Klopp and have a bond with him that is almost unique in the modern game.
“He’s the best move FSG have made.”
Redknapp believes the clear vision of Liverpool’s owners meant they were soon able to banish the memory of predecessors Tom Hicks and George Gillett, whose in-fighting had helped push the club to the brink of administration.
“FSG have done an amazing job,” he said. “When you think about the previous owners, and I’m not just going to have a go at them, it was difficult. The fans never felt as one with Hicks and Gillett.
“But as soon as FSG came to Liverpool, straight away you could see the vision they had.
“It took them a little time to get used to things, but they have made some great signings off the pitch and changed the commercial side dramatically.”
