FSG may have hinted at Liverpool plans beyond Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool and Manchester United were reportedly instigators in the now-rejected Project Big Picture proposals.

It was a plan put forward as a look to the future of the professional game but, after being leaked to The Telegraph, many raised concerns.

Many elements of the document - which was onto its 18th draft - were positive for many involved, but criticism centred on what was seen as a 'power grab' by several elite clubs in the Premier League, leading to the plans being abandoned.

John W Henry and FSG, who are also thought to be exploring the idea of combining forces with Moneyball guru Billy Beane, may not have got their way with the proposals, but just weeks after they passed the 10-year mark in charge at Anfield, the document still feels significant.

On the Liverpool.com podcast, Joel Rabinowitz said: "They have been far from perfect in a lot of decisions off the pitch in terms of ticket prices and the furlough scheme earlier this year.

"But in a different reality, not a lot would have had to have changed for Liverpool to have won every single trophy they could have won - the Europa League in Klopp’s first season, the League Cup they had won already, the FA Cup, they came close, and then they have done the big ones in terms of the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup.

"What comes next is really interesting, because pretty much half of their tenure so far has been under Klopp and he has been such a figurehead of the project - he completely chimes with their values and the model that they want to run.

"Klopp is currently contracted until 2024 but it will be fascinating to see what FSG look like beyond Klopp at Liverpool, if indeed they are still owners at that point."

The fact FSG were said to be so closely aligned with the creation of the Project Big Picture document and that they are being linked with Beane's investment and expansion of a football empire across Europe - similar perhaps in some ways to the Red Bull model - offers a hint to their future at Anfield, at the very least.

Project Big Picture was rather uninventive in its title, but was a long-term plan for the future of the game. Joining forces with Beane too appears a long-term strategy decision and not something that would be undertaken without the intention of sticking around.

Speculation has at times arisen about whether, should the right offer be placed on the table, FSG might move on from Liverpool and cash in on their investment, for which they would receive at least around six times what they paid a decade ago.

But both Project Big Picture and Billy Beane point towards what they have insisted all along: they are, and will remain, committed to Liverpool for some time yet.
