FSG chief speaks out on Liverpool furlough 'mistake'

Tom Werner conceded Liverpool made a mistake by placing some non-playing staff on furlough last month after the outbreak of coronavirus.

Liverpool chairman Werner, alongside owners Fenway Sports Group [FSG], reversed the decision inside 48 hours following a considerable backlash from supporters and the wider footballing world.

"It’s better to admit a mistake than to dig your heels in," Werner said via the Daily Mail.

"Hopefully people will know that all we really care about is trying to support the fans and support our players and our club in a way that is sustainable."

Werner, a key FSG figure with John W Henry and Mike Gordon, is hopeful football can soon return with Liverpool on the verge of their maiden Premier League title.

"It’s a terrible situation we’re all in," he added.

"Someday, hopefully, there will be a vaccine and we can return to the joy of being in a stadium and watching the elegant play of great football players."
