FS Premier Maitre L'Her warship docks on the River Clyde as part of multinational military exercise

The first warship has sailed up the River Clyde and docked in Glasgow in preparation for a multinational military exercise being staged across Scotland in the coming weeks.

The FS Premier Maitre L'Her French Navy warship is the first of eight frigates from Canada, Denmark, France and Portugal to arrive at King George V Docks in Govan as part of Joint Warrior, one of the largest military exercises of its kind in Europe, which will be running from October 4 and 15.

The 80.5m long frigate, which has been in service since 1980, docked alongside one of the huge Azamara cruise ships at Shieldhall earlier today, looking markedly small by comparison.

The exercise will involve involve a total of 28 warships, two submarines, 81 aircraft and more than 6000 military personnel and will be staged at military ranges across the country and at maritime exercise areas off the east, west and north coasts of Scotland.

A number of the vessels taking part, such as the FS Premier Maitre L'Her and the 400ft long Belgium warship BNS Leopold will be leaving from Glasgow, while other vessels will depart from Faslane.

Joint Warrior takes place twice a year and is designed, planned and delivered by the Joint Tactical Exercise Planning Staff based at Northwood in London, who will move to HM Naval Base Clyde to coordinate events during the fortnight.
