Frustration in Mapperley street as issue with no bin collections returns

A Nottingham woman who raised concerns over months of missed bin collections says the problem has returned.

Emma Emms, 47, spoke out in August over problems with bins in Querneby Road, Mapperley, being missed by Nottingham City Council bin lorries.

At the time she said there had been months of missed collections, resulting in residents having to call up every week to request another collection.

Following the article, Ms Emms said the situation improved for a couple of weeks, but the problem has now returned.

Ms Emms, a retail worker, said: "It's getting ridiculous - the lorry comes to the school at the junction (around two thirds of the way down Querneby Road) and turns off.

"I reported it, and then we had a street cleaner come around who said they were checking to see if we were lying.

"After I reported it, the collection didn't come until the following week.

"Now I'm concerned every time, because if I'm not in, or I'm working, I can't get the call in until the next day which delays it even further."

Thursdays are typically the day for the green waste bins, which are collected fortnightly.

If bins are left, Ms Emms said they soon overflow and residents previously raised concerns with pests being attracted to the rubbish.

"I've also been told there has been meetings to address this, to make sure the bins aren't missed, but last time they didn't even try," she said.

"When I ring up, I am sometimes angry but I say 'can't you understand my frustration?'

"All the neighbours have complained, and next week I am tempted to get all our bins out and put them across the road."

A City Council spokesperson said: “We understand when bins are missed that it is frustrating for residents and we do everything we can to avoid it.

"We would ask people to bear with our bin crews at the moment because Covid has led to personnel changes which means they may not always be familiar with their round.

"They are also having to deal with extra domestic waste with more people working from home during the pandemic.

"If bins are missed, we apologise and advise residents to report it by calling 0115 915 2000.”
