Frustration in Calverton as 'worst ever' fly tip is dumped at former colliery site

A huge pile of rubbish has been dumped at the former Calverton Colliery site - which has been described as the village's 'worst' ever fly-tip.

A reader captured the mess at the site off the B6386 Oxton Road.

Independent Councillor Pat Bosworth, who represents Calverton on Gedling Borough Council, was aware of the dump and said the area was a fly-tipping hotspot.

"I am dismayed that people can do this kind of thing really, that they can be so inconsiderate," she said.

"We have a recycling centre not even half a mile from it.

"The whole area has problems with fly-tipping because Gravelly Hollows is nearby, there are always problems because the road was blocked off.

"Gravelly Hollows used to cross the A614, it was blocked off several years ago by Nottinghamshire County Council and there's lots and lots of problems up there with people abandoning vehicles and fly-tipping.

"It's where they took the gravel from, that runs from the Oxton Road to the A614, but it's blocked off at the entrance to the A614."

Independent Councillor Mike Hope, who also represents Calverton on the borough Council, offered his personal view.

He said: "I am not sure why but there seems to have been quite a spate of fly-tipping in this area, around the Gravelly Hollows area.

"They (the colliery site and Gravelly Hollows) are very closely linked.

"There has been some talk about putting mobile CCTV up, I am not sure if that has happened yet.

"It looks like shocking waste, it's a very big heap. this is probably the worst case we have had in Calverton.

"This is clearly waste that must have been aimed at a dumping site, it's a huge pile."

He added: "Obviously people should not fly-tip, that is self-evident and clearly is costing the borough council a lot of money every year to clear the mess a few inconsiderate people continue to make."

Councillor Bosworth added she was also aware of recent mess left on a lay-by on the A6097 Oxton Bypass.

Nottinghamshire Police was contacted for comment.
