Frustration and fear from Clifton Village residents as travellers pitch up again

A number of caravans belonging to travellers returned to a field in Clifton Village causing frustration and fear amongst nearby residents.

The Clifton Village green has been used as a site by travellers in the past, and residents say they are "frustrated" and "fearful" over the ongoing activity.

Bollards were put in place around parts of the green near the village hall and Dovecote building in July 2017.

But as of Tuesday (April 30) night residents say some bollards were knocked out of the ground making the green accessible for caravans.

Patricia Rice, chairwoman of the Clifton Village Green residents' association, said: "The community is angry and annoyed after it took so long to get the council to agree to putting up the bollards.

"Caravans have been using the site for many years now, and we are totally fed up. We can't see an end."

In a planning report authorising the installation of wooden bollards and a barrier, the council confirmed there had been "16 visitations by travellers on the site" between 2011 and 2016.

Former chairman of the residents' association, Kevin McCormick previously said it had taken eight years of planning to get the bollards up.

Mrs Rice said residents were concerned about the disruption it could cause.

She said: "There has been damage before and rubbish left after, but what can you do? It's happening everywhere.

"Some of the travellers do clean up and the people who look after the green offer them bin bags.

"But there is also an issue with security, especially for people living alone, they feel intimidated by vans parked outside their homes.

"This is a kind community and any engagement we have with the travellers is always polite and respectful.

"Anyone wishing to use the site this weekend have had to put their plans on hold.

"The village hall is also being used as a polling station for the elections so I worry how that will be impacted.

"Overall, people are frustrated and some are fearful. I know at least one person who will move out of their home while the travellers are here."

On Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the Nottingham City Council said: "The council received reports that overnight, six caravans arrived at the Clifton Village Green site.

"It appears there may have been forced entry, with some damage seen by residents.

"This is private land owned by the council.

"The people on the site have been issued an eviction notice, around 10am this morning (May 1).

"Normally, the council would issue a 24 hour notice but CPOs have issued a more immediate notice that requires the caravans to leave within the next few hours.

"If the site is not cleared by around 1pm, CPOs will return with bailiffs and police officers to enforce the notice."

However, the city council confirmed the travellers were still at the site at 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 1.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "We received reports at 9.15pm on Tuesday April 30, regarding the travellers arriving at Clifton Village green.

"Officers were sent out to take a look at the potential damage to the bollards around the green.

"The posts have been taken out to gain access, but it is thought these will be put back, therefore it is not considered criminal damage.

"Police have now passed this report onto Nottingham City Council to deal with."
