Frustrated passenger blames 'adults behaving like toddlers' at Leeds Bradford Airport for queue horror

A Yorkshire businessman has blamed the Leeds Bradford Airport queue problems on adults "behaving like toddlers", saying the airport staff are not behind the issues.

Ian Gordon headed to the airport on Sunday morning to catch an early morning flight. The North Yorkshire resident was looking forward to a business trip he had planned in Malaga, Spain.

But when he arrived at the Yeadon airport around 5.30am, he was greeted by "crazy queues". The ongoing issues at the airport have been put down to staffing issues, but Ian says passengers who "take forever" in security are to blame.

Ian said: "At 5.30am today there were crazy queues. Having got through security, first observations are it could be much quicker if passengers prepared before getting to the tray. It’s not hard.

"Take out electrical, put watch in coat pocket , take off boots, coats, and belts. Some take forever."

He added: "It's like people have forgotten how to go to the airport. The thing is that you've got thousands of people trying to get through the airport at the same time, especially with those early morning flights.

"People have got toilet roll syndrome like in lockdown. They are all rushing to the airport earlier than they need to, and then they are not getting organised in the queue.

"People hadn't gotten out their electrical items before they get to security, and then now because everything is on our phones people haven't got their boarding passes ready, or it is in their photos and they can't find it. People have forgotten how to fly."

The passenger added he thought that staff at the airport were "great" and "helpful". "There was only three check-in desks open so they could have opened another one but there's nothing more they could have done for everyone", he said.

"They can't help if grown adults are behaving like toddlers."

Ian said he got through security in 40 minutes this morning. And he is not alone as other passengers also reported that despite the long queues, the pace getting through security was between 45 minutes to an hour - an improvement on the two to three hour waiting times ongoing since April.

However others reported they were in "carnage" while trying to fly over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, and on Sunday afternoon a plane was reportedly "stuck" on the runway for over two hours.

Passengers were escorted from the plane and fire engines were seen on the runway. The incident lead to a number of cancelled flights and delays at the airport.
