Frustrated Fife villagers erect 'visitors f*** off' banner amid coronavirus lockdown

Frustrated villagers in Fife have made it clear visitors who continue to flock there during the coronavirus lockdown are not welcome.

Locals in West Weymss, in Fife, have erected a stark banner, strung up between two trees, with the words: "Visitors f*** off, stay home. Corona free".

The seaside village has a population of under 250, many of whom are elderly and in self-isolation.

But, according to locals, this hasn't stopped dog walkers "inundating" the area as they continue to drive to the coastal beauty spot on the Firth of Forth.

Facebook page Fife Jammer Locations shared the photo of the banner, captioned: "West Wemyss does not welcome you."

The image has already racked up over 1,000 likes from amused users but has proved to be fairly controversial and stirred up some debate.

One local said: "We’ve been inundated for two weeks with people coming by the car load and their dugs.

"This village has a majority of elderly residents who are self isolating, we can’t get walking because of the ones coming down who aren’t socially distancing.

"It’s not a bloody holiday, stay in your own areas, we’re trying to protect the village. Perhaps the sign might do the trick."

"Quite right, stay local", said another.

However, others were not so impressed with outsiders and even locals slamming those who had put up the banner.

"As a delivery driver for a large supermarket I will obey your sign and turn round in future. Enjoy your tea", said one.

Another added: "Wemyss which I am born and bred have always taken a pride in our villages but have never acted like this [sic].

"Yes I can appreciate reminding people to stay away but some people my son and his family come often to walk as he has a child with problems and she can walk safely and be safe."

One user even joked: "I think they put that sign up to ATTRACT visitors."
