Edinburgh sports boss gobsmacked after council shuts road just as business reopens

The owner of World of Football at Marine Drive and Edinburgh's Corn Exchange has hit out at the council for closing down two out of three roads customers use to access his business.

Paul DeMarco has been unable to properly operate World of Football for the last 14 months due to strict coronavirus measures and feels this is another kick in the teeth.

Mr. DeMarco is concerned that the closure of Silverknowes Road and West Shore Road will make it more complicated for customers to access World of Football.

He told Edinburgh Live how it just feels like yet another 'restriction' after finally being given the green light by Nicola Sturgeon to reopen World of Football on Monday.

He said: "They have closed down West Shore Road and Silverknowes Road leaving customers with just one road, Marine Drive, to access the venue.

"I’ve still not heard back from the council after contacting them about it.

"We are worried our customers will have a problem getting to our business when we have already been closed down for the best part of 14 months."

"We would stress all of our customers to get in contact if they are struggling to get there now.

"After 14 months of being closed down as a business, the last thing we want is to put people off or give them problems accessing the venue.

"It’s been hard enough to get open with all the restrictions and it just feels like we have yet another restriction placed on us."

A Council spokesperson said: "Changes at West Shore Road and Silverknowes Road have been introduced to create traffic-free walking and cycling routes to the popular promenade, as well as a calmer, safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists to travel and exercise.

"As part of this we’ve introduced parking restrictions on Salvesen Terrace meaning people who travel to Silverknowes by car can navigate past houses safely and help reduce congestion resulting from traffic visiting this popular part of the city.

"Any road closures are clearly signed to allow drivers to take an alternative route to their destination. We'll continue to monitor the scheme now it's on the ground, making amendments if necessary."
