Customers have been left frustrated with Costa's 50p coffee offer after the retailer's app crashed due to the high demand and they were unable to redeem the deal.
The coffee chain is celebrating its 50th birthday and is offering Costa fans any barista-made hot drink for 50p until Thursday, April 15.
But to get the offer, customers must download the Costa Coffee Club mobile app on their phone and scan the app at the till when they buy their drink.
However, dozens of people were left disappointed when the app crashed due to so many people using it.
Costa fans took to Twitter to share their frustrations.
Becky tweeted: "Trying to get my 50p Costa and just keep getting errors on my app!!"
Leah wrote: "The Costa app isn't working so don’t bother trying to get a 50p drink cause you won't get it."
Sarah asked Costa: "Seeing as the app won't load am I able to use my actual Costa card to get the 50p coffee?? As the app says...it's your fault not mine!"
Stuart said: "Costa - I'm assuming you will be honouring the 50p coffees even if we can't launch the app instore because, as your app says, it's you not us customers!"
Judith wrote: "The issue is people are being greedy and getting loads should have limited it seen lots of posts people buying 5 or 6? We will go support a local cafe instead after recent service from Costa I'm beginning to lose my love for it anyway!"
Stacey added: "Went this morning massive queue in shop and drive through...told everyone the system is down for the costa card so have to pay full price hmmmm. Has anyone actually had a 50p coffee?!"
@TheXentertainer tweeted Costa and said: "So, Costa, you have a 50p hot drinks deal that can only be done through your app. However, your app has crashed, I've had to reinstall it and now does not recognise any of my details. Pathetic. Why have it as an app only deal?"
Charlotte added: "Awful to advertise 50p coffee, only for your staff not to be able to deliver due to the app not allowing them to do so. I went out of my way to make a trip to Costa, awful awful service and quite frankly false advertising."
There was some sympathy for the coffee chain though.
Lev tweeted: "Sending my thoughts and prayers to all Costa barista staff working this 50p event. May all the Karens and Darrens not cause you any problems. Inevitable but whatevs."
A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: "We're experiencing some technical issues within our Costa Coffee app and are working hard to resolve it. Customers are still able to download the app and can redeem our 'any hot drink for 50p' offer by simply showing their Costa Coffee Club app at the till point of any participating store. We'd like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this has caused."
