Frustrated Chelsea fans call for ex-Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers to succeed Frank Lampard as Gary Neville raves about Leicester City man

Former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers is being backed to take over at Chelsea should Frank Lampard get the sack.

The Blues were demolished 3-1 by Manchester City on Sunday to leave Lampard's future hanging in the balance.

Owner Roman Abramovich is no stranger to axing managers but firing a club legend could be a different matter, with Lampard having represented the club with distinction over the years.

Still, Chelsea's struggles have led to supporters to speculate that Rodgers, a former Blues coach, should take over if Lampard is given his marching orders.

The Blues sit eighth, only four points off the Champions League spots, but it is the manner of performances which are bugging fans at present.

Bookmakers also see Rodgers as favourite, and according to the Mail, Lampard is now "walking a tightrope" at Stamford Bridge.

It was only last month that ex-Swans manager Rodgers was hotly tipped to replace Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. Now it is Blues supporters who are calling for his appointment.

Leicester have been superb this term under Rodgers' tutelage, with the Foxes sitting third behind Manchester United and Liverpool in the Premier League table.

Their 2-1 win over Newcastle United at the weekend was further evidence of Rodgers' growing influence in the top flight, with his stock rising with each game.

Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville is a big fan of the Northern Irishman and praised the Foxes' developing style under him.

“[They] seem to be set up to repeat what they did last season,” Neville said on the Gary Neville Podcast . "They’ll just hope that if they can get in amongst those Champions League spaces that they can finish it off this time, they obviously just fell away at the end of last season.

“But, really good, Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job and continues to do so, they look confident. (Jamie) Vardy is good, (Youri) Tielemans has scored the goal, it’s a fantastic goal.”

The former Manchester United defender then spoke about the development of City’s style under Rodgers.

“They’ve still got an element of counter-attack about them but if you think about how they were a few years ago when it was pure counter attack, it was that or nothing, it’s different now, they’ve got football players in their team that can really excite you,” he added.

“Tielemans and Harvey Barnes I like watching. Even (Marc) Albrighton on the right-hand side, he was the one who played the pass in for Tielemans’ goal. The quality is there.”
