Idina Menzel, the voice of grown-up Elsa in the worldwide animated musical smash Frozen, has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

Interviewed by the Telegraph, Menzel said she hoped to be involved in the follow-up film, a no-brainer for studio Disney following the $1.27bn box office success achieved by the first movie.

Asked what she could reveal about the sequel and a planned stage version, the Broadway star of Wicked and If/Then replied: “That they’re all in the works, ha ha!” She was then asked if she had signed up for both, and responded: “Ah, yeah sure … Not the stage show – I don’t know what will happen with that – but the movie hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride.”

Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film in March after overtaking Toy Story 3. It is also the highest-grossing musical, ahead of The Lion King and Mamma Mia! And with a re-release impending, it could yet break into the top three biggest movies of all time (Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s film currently stands in fifth).

Disney confirmed its intention to continue the story of ice-wielding queen Elsa and her sister Anna after announcing a new six-minute short in September. The film will debut as Frozen returns to cinemas for the festive season.
