Frozen: Heart of Dread by Melissa de La Cruz and Michael Johnston - review

This book was good. Not really spectacular, but not a train wreck either. It was a good book. Now, I'm usually incredibly excited and rave endlessly about books, so why am I settling for just 'good' this time? Well…

Melissa de La Cruz, Michael Johnston, Frozen (Heart of Dread)

First off, the characters were really shallow and undetailed: the usual cliches you get depressingly often in YA books these days. Nat is a tough girl with a dark secret she needs to hide, haunted by her horrible past, who happens to be completely gorgeous but doesn't seem to know it. She meets Wes in her escape from the frozen wasteland of Las Vegas in search of 'The Blue', a place where the sun still shines and the waters are blue. Wes: a dark, handsome boy with a dark, mysterious past.

See what I mean? The exact character outlines that only the best authors can break free from. Even the biggest titles like Divergent and The Mortal Instruments do it. But unlike this book, Divergent and TMI have believable romances that aren't love at first sight. Face it, there's never love at first sight. There can be crush at first sight, or you can think someone's attractive, but for Wes and Nat it's instantly oh my god it's like you've been my boyfriend for years! Have I met you before? You seem familiar…

PLEASE.

I understand that I'm being incredibly hard on this book, and it was an okay book. Nice idea, good plot progression, though I did find my attention wandering at points. I think the main downfall here was the characters.
