Frozen by Melissa de la Cruz - review

Melissa de la Cruz Michael Johnston, Heart of Dread: Frozen

For a start, this book is not at all related to the Disney movie of the same name, Frozen. In fact, I thought about it too when the book turned up. Honestly, I quite enjoyed the movie and, for some reason, I was happy to to receive the book that led to the making of Frozen (the movie itself had won some Oscars, the authors were No.1 New York Times Bestsellers).

The first few lines seemed convincing too, well most of it anyway, perhaps they'd changed it a bit in the movie?

Frozen: Heart of Dread.
A Girl Born In Flame, A Heart Bound In Ice.

When I turned over the book, I changed my mind.

New Vegas was once a city covered in bling and jazz, now it is blanketed in ice. Natasha Kestal is at the heart of it, working in a casino, looking for a way out of this frozen land. She has heard of a mythical place where the sun still shines and the waters flow. She believes that she can get there with some help. A place where she won't be haunted by those who know her darkest secret. She won't ever be safe until she gets to the Blue, because the world is frozen and has turned into a big battle field. Natasha can't be safe, not even from Wes, the boy trusted with her life and her heart.

This is how the author describes Natasha's anxiety about Wes:

But she couldn't be certain… did he want to keep her safe? Or did he just want the stone?

On their way, they encounter many ships, blocking their journey. And here is a bit on their journey across a dirty and garbage covered sea.

Inching along through the murky water was like wading through tar, sticky and scummy, while the smell of rotting garbage permeated the air. The days felt like weeks.

As they travel, love springs between Wes and Natasha, and they soon find out that with some love and friends, the journey can be made. But, how easy is it to reach the Blue? Can they get there at all?

I LOVED this book, I found it to be remarkably vivid, exciting, and addictive.

I would give this book a 8/10. I felt that it began a touch slowly, and I read not much of it over three days, but after the exciting sections began, I breezed though it in a day!

I can't wait for the sequel, Stolen, which will be published in September 2015!
