Frontline NHS workers to stage protest over pay rises at Glasgow Green today

NHS workers are to stage a protest over public sector pay rises at Glasgow Green today.

Healthcare workers will rally over equal pay, unsafe staffing levels and the privatisation of the health service and are urging members of the public to show their support.

It comes after the UK Government announced pay rises for public sector workers including the Armed Forces, doctors and dentists.

Thousands of health workers won't see their wages increase despite working on the frontline throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

Across the UK, NHS staff including nurses, porters and cleaners were not included in the pledge because they are already part of Agenda for Change - a three-year pay rise scheme which ends in April 2021.

The protest is taking place at the McLellan Arch between 11am and 2pm (Glasgow Live)

Organisers said: "We will be standing, socially distanced and with masks, to protest against the lack of pay parity within the NHS."

They claim the recent announcement fails to recognise the efforts of a massive number of health care workers, adding: "This announcement is a massive slap in the face, slapped by the hand that once clapped for us. We deserve better.

"Please, stand with us. Change can happen, but we need our collective voices to be heard. We need to be loud and we need your voice.

"This protest isn't just for those healthcare workers who have been let down by our government, yet again. It's for anyone who loves and values our NHS and wants to see its workers treated equally and fairly."

The protest is taking place at the McLellan Arch opposite the High Court of Justiciary between 11am and 2pm. It is being streamed online for those who cannot attend in person.

Social distancing rules will be in place, with those attending asked to wear masks and blue ribbons.
