From tanning beds to tapas as plans approved for new Whitley Bay deli

A former tanning shop is set to be turned into an Italian tapas restaurant.

The restaurant, called Pranzo, could open by the end of the September after planning permission was granted this week.

Approving the venue, North Tyneside Council said it would "improve in the vitality and vibrancy" of Whitley Bay.

Local resident Pablo Masucci is the man behind the venture, and said he was thrilled to get the go-ahead.

"We are looking at opening around the end of September, as we want to get some work done over the next couple of months," he said.

"But it will be an Italian deli during the day and then doing tapas at night, with speciality produce and fish dishes with ingredients brought at the Fish Quay."

The Station Road unit is currently vacant. The plans were approved despite some concerns over noise.

Formerly the site of 'Shimmer Sun Studio', there is also permission for 20 outdoor seats while sample menus show Pranzo will also serve breakfast.

It will be the latest venue in rapidly developing Whitley Bay, which recently had a street named as one of the ten coolest shopping districts on Earth.

In recent years, a multi-million pound seafront regeneration project has breathed life into the area, with the restoration of Spanish City seen as the centrepiece of that development.
