The annual leave is booked, the hotel is arranged, you’ve packed your finest fits and you’re raring to go. Everything for your Southeast Asia adventure is sorted, except one thing – you really don’t know how best to spend your time while you’re away. So, on your final few days at home, you’re frantically typing “what to do in Singapore” into an AI chat bot, hoping it doesn’t send you entirely fictional landmarks and activities.
The internet can only tell you so much, and not all of it can be trusted. It’s much safer to rely on real, local knowledge. If you book a Hilton hotel, you’ll be in luck – its top-tier concierges live, work and play locally, meaning they can recommend experiences beyond the obvious. That means fewer crowds, more authentic experiences and an all-round more “local” experience for you and your fellow travellers.
The secret to finding concierges who are the best of the best is to look for the crossed golden keys pinned to their lapels. It’s a sign they are members of Les Clefs d’Or, an international association with exacting entry requirements and just 4,000 members worldwide.
Here’s what six of Hilton’s finest concierges – all Les Clefs d’Or members – have to say about what to see and do near their respective hotels.
Waldorf Astoria Bangkok, Thailand
Panisa Ariyasakul has worked as a concierge for approximately 20 years and has been at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok since its opening in 2018 – so she definitely knows how to make the most of a trip to Thailand.
For a cultural experience you’ll never forget
“In the morning, take a short walk to Erawan shrine and its four-faced Buddha,” Ariyasakul recommends. “People from all over the world – especially across Asia – come here to pay their respects and make a wish. Visitors typically offer incense, candles and garlands as well as praying to each of the four faces, which represent different aspects of life such as health, wealth, love, and success. You might also see traditional Thai dance performances, often sponsored by worshippers in gratitude for fulfilled wishes – a unique and culturally rich experience to witness.”
To eat like the locals
And if you’re in search of some good food, look no further than Co-co Walk, an unpretentious lane of bars and eateries and a personal favourite of Ariyasakul’s after a long day. “We usually start with a delicious papaya salad at Somtum Khun Yai – always the perfect balance of spice and freshness. Then we make our way to Chilling House Cafe, a relaxed venue with live music that sets just the right mood.” If you’re stuck on what to order here, Ariyasakul recommends the spicy glass noodle salad, the “irresistibly crispy” moo thod (deep-fried pork), and goong chae nam pla (raw shrimp in fish sauce). Pair it with some hima – icy cold beer served over frozen ice flakes – and you’re all set.
Hilton Singapore Orchard
Considering that he was a finalist in the customer service excellence for hotels category at last year’s Singapore Tourism Awards, you’ll want to take tips from concierge Magendra Berdayah.
For impeccable views and dining
If you’re in need of a date night to get the sparks flying, Berdayah has just the spot. “Cable Car Sky Dining [at Mount Faber] offers a romantic dining experience with stunning views. Begin the evening at the Dusk @ Mount Faber Peak restaurant and have a refreshing welcome drink before heading to a private cable car cabin to enjoy a 60-minute dining experience while witnessing Singapore’s sunset.”
For getting your evening started
And if you’re looking for a good bar to wind down in, how about something a little hidden away? “Cat Bite Club is a gem in Singapore, focusing on agave and rice spirits with a hidden entrance and minimalistic decor,” Berdayah says. Need a little help with your order? He recommends the hulk smash, “an agave spinoff of the invisible gin cocktail, with Ocho Blanco Tequila instead of gin”.
Conrad Singapore Marina Bay
With more than 25 years of experience in hospitality, and more than a decade at the Conrad Singapore Marina Bay, Mohamed Fasle Rifaeh is president of Les Clefs d’Or Singapore – part of a global a community of concierges who are passionate about turning trips into something truly memorable.
For a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle
“Singapore’s wetlands are home to native mangroves, freshwater cascades, and a surprising diversity of wildlife – including kingfishers, herons, and even the occasional monitor lizard,” says Mohamed. “A walking trail weaves through the area, with cascades, rock pools and viewing points that invite you to pause and take it all in. My favourite time to go is just after sunrise or around dusk, when the light is soft and the wildlife most active.” It’s perfect for that quiet moment when you need a bit of a break, offering visitors a “peaceful escape” from the hustle and bustle of the city.
For romance with a trendy edge
If you want to impress on date night, then Mohamed suggests something with a more local, authentic feel. “Hidden behind a fridge door in a casual kopitiam (local coffee shop), the Dragon Chamber opens into a moody, dimly lit dining room serving bold modern Chinese dishes and cocktails with a story. It’s playful, a little dramatic, and full of surprises – just like a great night out should be.”
Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, Thailand
With 11 years of experience working at the Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, and seven as a concierge, Nattapong Baisiri knows all there is when it comes to recommending local spots to hit up on your next trip to Bangkok.
For entertaining children
Something for all the family, and especially the little ones, the Children’s Discovery Museum has many things to offer, including a butterfly garden and an insectarium as part of its outdoor exhibits, and free admission. Baisiri says: “This museum offers a wide range of interactive and educational activities for children, including hands-on science exhibits, creative play zones, and outdoor exploration areas such as the Dino Detective Zone and a water park.”
For cocktail lovers who want to feel in the know
You’ll need to be eagle-eyed to find this next recommendation – a secret speakeasy. To find this bar, you’ll need to look out for the hidden elevator next to the Ramen Ichiban restaurant, and ride it up to the fifth floor. “A heavy door opens to a cozy bar adorned with neon red signs, retro decor, and a pill-shaped counter, creating a warm and almost festive atmosphere,” Baisiri says. “The piano isn’t just for show – live music performances, including cover bands and singers, add to the ambiance.”
Hilton Saigon, Vietnam
Tran Duc Kien has more than 12 years of experience as a concierge, and has made it his mission to “create unforgettable experiences” for guests at Hilton Saigon since joining the team as it prepared to open last year.
To understand the nation’s history
“The War Remnants Museum offers an emotional and impactful view of the Vietnam war,” Tran says, pointing to the detailed exhibitions, photography, military equipment, and personal accounts you’ll find inside. “The museum’s focus on the resilience of the Vietnamese people and their journey through adversity makes it incredibly poignant. It’s a chance to connect with Vietnam’s history in a very personal way.”
For a cultural experience the whole family can enjoy
And for something the whole family can enjoy, you might want to check out the traditional Vietnamese art of water puppetry – where the water is the stage and puppeteers stand up to their waists in it. “It’s both entertaining and culturally significant,” Tran says. “A show is full of colourful performances, accompanied by music, and is a perfect way for children to engage with the local culture in a fun and unique way.”
Hilton Pattaya, Thailand
And finally, we have Banphot Thauyma, who has worked at the Hilton Pattaya for almost 15 years. With more than seven years of experience as a concierge, Thauyma has many recommendations to offer visiting guests. Here are a couple …
For seafood aficionados
Knowing where to eat while on holiday is half the battle and the leading cause of arguments (according to me) when you can’t make a decision. But if you’re a lover of seafood, Thauyma has you covered, recommending Pattaya’s renowned seafood market Lan Pho Naklua. “If you’re craving fresh seafood, this is the place to go,” Thauyma says. “The market offers a wide variety of local seafood options, and you can select your ingredients and have them cooked on-site or simply choose a comfortable spot to enjoy your meal. It’s a lively and authentic experience, perfect for groups or families looking to dive into the local food scene.”
For unforgettable snorkelling
And finally, if you’re looking for something a little farther afield to enjoy while in Thailand, you can take a 30-45 minute boat ride from Pattaya and discover the wonders of Koh Larn, also known as Coral Island. “Koh Larn is a serene island ideal for relaxation and exploring nature,” Thauyma says. “The clear waters and peaceful beaches make it perfect for a day trip. You can rent a motorbike or enjoy various activities like snorkelling and parasailing, depending on your preferences. For a quieter experience, it’s best to visit in the morning.”
