From Script to Final Cut: Adobe’s Firefly Video Editor Does It All

Adobe has rolled out some major updates to its Firefly creative AI studio. At the Adobe MAX conference this week, the company unveiled new AI tools for video and audio generation alongside an upgraded image model and a lineup of partner AI models integrated directly into Firefly.

The expansion addresses a gap in Firefly’s capabilities. Until now, the platform has focused primarily on image generation and design. However, the new tools now allow creators to handle multiple stages of production without leaving the app. For example, generate soundtrack, though currently in public beta, creates fully licensed instrumental music tracks that sync with video footage. It also generates speech that does the same for voiceovers, offering multiple voice options and the ability to adjust emotion and pacing. Interestingly, both tools are said to deliver results in seconds compared to hours.

However, the biggest highlight of the update is its new timeline-based video editor. While still in private beta, it functions as a web-based editing suite where creators can generate clips, upload their own footage, add voiceovers and soundtracks, and edit with frame-by-frame precision or text-based commands. Adobe says the editor will roll out next month, and interested users can already join the waitlist.

Apart from that, image generation got an upgrade, too. Firefly Image Model 5 generates photorealistic images in native 4MP resolution without the need for upscaling. The model handles complex compositions and anatomically accurate portraits better than previous versions. More importantly, it powers a new Prompt to Edit feature that lets creators describe image edits in everyday language instead of manually adjusting individual elements.

Adobe also simplified how creators access different AI models. Firefly now integrates models from ElevenLabs, Google, Luma AI, OpenAI, Runway, Topaz Labs, and others in a single interface. So creators can choose which model to use depending on the task, all within one subscription. The company also announced Firefly Custom Models, letting creators train personalized versions that generate assets in their own unique style.

Furthermore, the company has also introduced an AI agent named Project Moonlight. It is also in the private beta, and it works across Adobe’s apps and can analyze a creator’s social media to suggest content ideas. However, this AI agent works more like a brainstorming partner than a tool. You just have to describe what you want, and Moonlight helps you get from concept to finished product in minutes.

When it comes to pricing and availability, the Creative Cloud Pro and Firefly subscribers get unlimited image generations with all available models through December 1, plus unlimited video generations with Firefly’s video model. Plus, since the majority of the new tools are in beta, early adopters can test them before they roll out to the broader user base.
