From Rudiger to Pulisic: The Chelsea players with a point to prove after the international break

It's the second international break of the 2019/2020 season, providing the perfect chance to assess the Chelsea squad.

The Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League table - outside the top four on goal difference - are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and are up and running in the Champions League.

Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have been the standout players thus far, while the relationship between some fans and new vice-captain Jorginho seems to have come full circle.

Furthermore, Callum Hudson-Odoi as well as Reece James are fully fit, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek delivered a positive injury update this week.

But which players need to show improvements or have a point to prove once club football returns to our screens?

Football.london takes a look.

The defence

This is seven players rolled into one, including goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who has kept just one clean sheet across all competitions so far this season.

And whilst that is mostly down to what's going on in front of him, the Spaniard has hardly covered himself in glory at times.

If the Blues are to finish in the top four and perhaps win a trophy then Lampard will need to sort out the defence, it might be too much of an ask to keep asking Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount to keep scoring.

Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma have all been tried at centre-back, while Cesar Azpilicueta, Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have been the usual suspects at full-back.

Lampard has even reverted to a three-man defence for a more solid look and will be looking forward to the return of Antonio Rudiger who should make a big difference.

That should give Zouma in particular extra motivation to up his game as faces becoming the fourth-choice centre-back once the German is fully fit.

N'Golo Kante

The brilliant midfielder doesn't have anything to prove in terms of his quality, but fans will certainly want to see more from him after the international break.

Simply because Kante's start to the season has been hampered by injuries.

Still feeling the affects of the knee problem which almost kept him out of last season's Europa League final, the Frenchman barely had a pre-season and missed four games with an ankle injury.

Upon making a goalscoring return against Liverpool he then missed the win over Brighton and Hove Albion with an hamstring scare.

He has played 90 minutes in the last two games, so it would appear he's over those injury problems.

Let's hope that's the case as Chelsea are a much better team with Kante in the side.

Ross Barkley

If Barkley had transferred his pre-season form into the actual season then he'd have a strong case to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Except he hasn't.

His only goal has come in a 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, and is yet to record an assist or net in either the Champions League or the Premier League.

That penalty miss against Valencia has hardly helped.

Neither has the form of Jorginho, Mateo Kovavic and Mason Mount which means Barkley is very much on the outside looking in at the moment.

But as they say, 'form is temporary, class is permanent' and there's still time for Barkley to win back his place but he really needs to push on after the international break.

Christian Pulisic

Just seeing Pulisic getting more game time would be a start.

The USA international has endured a slow adaptation period to the Premier League and has been completely dropped from matchday squads under Lampard of late.

He did mark his return to action with an assist in the 4-1 win over Southampton.

That could be what turns his Chelsea career around.

With Hudson-Odoi back, Mount in superb form and Willian a favourite under Lampard, competition for a place on the flanks is strong and Pulisic really needs to pick his form up.

Chelsea's back-up strikers

Tammy Abraham is the first-choice striker at the moment. With his record in front of goal, there can be no arguments that he is deserving of leading the line.

As a result, Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud aren't getting as many minutes.

That's not an ideal scenario especially with the European Championships on the horizon. France manager Didier Deschamps has already called for Giroud to get more game time.

Both players can only hope for chances when Abraham is rested and even then they must show Lampard enough to be considered for a regular starting berth.

Just like what Batshuayi did before the international break when he climbed off the bench to score at St Mary's.
