From Rangers and Celtic clashes to Stirling Uni: Chris Erskine set for East Kilbride debut

Last season Chris Erskine was rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in Scottish football.

The 33-year-old got used to playing at big venues, against the top sides.

But trips to to face Rangers at Ibrox or Celtic at Celtic Park are a thing of the past for the attacking midfielder, as he prepares to make his East Kilbride debut against a University of Stirling outfit at Forthbank tomorrow.

Erskine made a shock move to his hometown team in July and will be a talisman for Lowland League Kilby in their pursuit of promotion from the fifth tier.

Erskine hasn't forgotten his roots, with a breakthrough spell at Kilbirnie Ladeside in the Juniors landing him a senior move to Partick Thistle in 2009.

But he knows his first foray at this level will be a fry cry from facing the likes of the Old Firm.

"It is, aye," he says, when that point is put to him.

"I was told that by the boys that there will be some places we'll go that I probably wouldn't imagine.

"But if I think back to my career before I played for Thistle, I was in the Junior leagues and stuff.

"I think they boys are thinking I've forgotten my roots and where I've come from, but I've not.

"It's not something that is fazing me and I came here for the right reasons.

"I knew when I came here that I will be going to places like that and there will be times when the stadiums aren't great - or there's no stadium at all - and the changing rooms aren't great.

"It's all part of coming here and also some of the reason why we want to get the club into the professional leagues."

The former Dundee United man joins a host of big-name signings like ex-Rangers star Kyle Hutton and ex-Thistle and United team-mate Paul Paton.

Kilby have added 10 new players to their ranks, but Erskine has dismissed claims they are title favourites ahead of defending champions Kelty Hearts.

He added: "I think the fact that Kelty had most of their team together last season and have played a season together, I'd probably put them favourites, to be honest.

"They've made good signings in the summer as well and to be so good last season, and run away with the league, they've got to be favourites."
