From pumpkin gingersnap to cranberry, fall flavors hit ice cream shops

Sept. 24--Fall slipped off the calendar page and into our lives with Wednesday's autumnal equinox, but that doesn't mean we're instantly doomed to slurping hearty stews or sipping schnapps under the bleachers at football games. It's (still) the season for ice cream, gelato and frozen custard too.

At local shops, look for a slew of flavors perfect for fall:

Black Dog Gelato: New this fall will be chamomile lavender baked apple, according to office manager Reeny Hofrichter. Also try the shop's roasted red pepper flavor paired with pecan pie, she adds. 1995 W. Belmont Ave., 773-348-7935; 859 N. Damen Ave., 773-235-3116; 131 N. Clinton St., 312-877-5272.

Cone Gourmet Ice Cream: At this West Loop shop, look for three fall-themed ice creams come October: sweet potato with brown sugar and marshmallow fluff, pumpkin cheesecake and cranberry walnut, says co-owner Mary McGuire. There will be a green apple sorbet too. 1047 W. Madison St., 312-666-5111.

Eataly Chicago: The pastry department will launch a spiced pear sorbetto and three new gelato flavors -- ginger vanilla, apple cinnamon and almond stracciatella -- Oct. 5, according to Daltyn Little, an Eataly Chicago public relations associate. 43 E. Ohio St., 312-521-8700.

George's Ice Cream Sweets: Look for snap-o-lantern, a pumpkin ice cream spiked with gingersnaps, to be in the Andersonville store in a week or so, says Jennifer Shilts, general manager. Other fall flavors include caramel apple pie and bourbon pecan pie. 5306 N. Clark St., 773-271-7600.

Lickity Split Frozen Custard Sweets: Pumpkin frozen custard is such a popular fall flavor at Lickity Split that co-owner Ken Anderson expects to run it through November. But there are other flavors on the menu this season: Peanut butter, inspired by the return to school, is slated to be replaced next week by apple, he says. Later this fall, look for maple and, at Halloween, black licorice. 6056 N. Broadway St., 773-274-0830; 7000 N. Western Ave., 773-293-7239.
