Claims that David Cameron once put “a private part of his anatomy into a dead pig’s mouth” sent Twitter into a frenzy of Photoshopped pics, porcine puns and gasping disbelief.

Hashtags #Hameron #Oink and #piggate started trending on the social network minutes after the Daily Mail front page containing the allegations was revealed on Sunday evening.

Charlie Brooker, the satirist and broadcaster, was quick to respond to comparisons made between the claims in Lord Ashcroft’s unauthorised biography and his dystopic comedy-drama Black Mirror, in which a fictional prime minister has sex with a pig.

There were bemused reactions from some politicians.

Political journalists competed to claim the best prime minister pig pun prize.

Some Twitter users dug up unfortunate pictures.

Ed Miliband’s bacon sandwich debacle made an inevitable return.

Strange stories from the past are looking even stranger.

Some felt the real revelation was the claim that Supertramp was playing during alleged dope-smoking sessions in Cameron’s student room.

James Delingpole, a friend of the future prime minister at Oxford, was quoted by the Daily Mail about drug-taking by Cameron. He has since responded.

Journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan could not resist a dig.

Others went for a more surrealistic approach.

And what did Downing Street say? No 10 declined to comment on the unofficial book but a Conservative source said it did not recognise any of the allegations made on the front page of the Daily Mail.
