From perfect pouts to pencil skirts: the rise of genderless fashion at London Fashion Week Men's AW19

Genderless fashion has experienced a powerful evolution in recent years.

From co-ed shows to unisex collections, much progress has been made on the catwalks. No more so than at London Fashion Week Men's, which this season led the way in gender fluid fashion, thanks to a host of boundary breaking designers such as Charles Jeffrey and Art School.

During the latest LFWM autumn/winter 2019, a record number of designers paved the way for non-binary fashion. From perfect pouts to pencil skirts, here's how designers blurred the lines...

Spotlight on Skirts

The most unexpected AW19 menswear trend: skirts, most notably kilts.

The Scottish style staple successfully managed to infiltrate the latest menswear collections, following a recent resurgence on the womenswear scene. Iceberg put a streetwear spin on the style, giving it a casual aesthetic with trainers and an oversized knitwear, Art School cut a more minimal figure with a sleek black design and Charles Jeffrey debuted a very on-trend blue, red and brown check.

Killer kilts weren't the only skirt to be put in the spotlight. Unisex brand Art School featured a pencil skirt with a pink floral motif. The look was completed with a matching pink beard (model's own) and fluffy heels.

Meanwhile, Charles Jeffrey, who created a collaboration with Topshop in 2018, took an edgier approach, creating a patent teal skirt and matching jacket, as well as a range of dresses.

Makeup for men boomed in 2018. The beauty industry saw a rise in male beauty brand ambassadors, and Chanel launched its own makeup line for men.

The trend certainly translated onto the LFWM runway as Chalayan sent models down the catwalk with classic red, tangerine and berry stained lips, as well as futuristic pops of neon yellow to match the collection.

Never one to shy away from strong sartorial statements, Charles Jeffrey also featured a strong red lip among several other creative beauty looks.

A Handle on Handbags

On men's catwalks we're used to seeing an array of unisex handbags, from backpacks to bumbags, styles of a more feminine nature took centre stage at the Fashion East show.

Upcoming designer Stefan Cooke merged gender identities as male models carried classic handbags in black and transparent styles down the runway.

Elsewhere Charles Jeffrey, Private Policy and Staff Only also saw models carrying bags, whilst A-Cold-Wall featured various cross body designs.

LFWM AW19: another great season for busting gender labels.
