From Penneys to Tesco - here's what to expect when all non-essential retails opens on Monday

Ireland is now half-way through the Government's phased re-opening plan, and non-essential retail outlets will fully re-open from Monday onwards.

So far, hairdressers, barbers, and non-essential retail outlets like Penneys and JD Sports have re-opened on an appointment basis.

Monday will also signal the return of non-essential shopping in Ireland's supermarkets - clothes can return to Tesco's shelves while Aldi and Lidl can restock their middle shelves.

Here's all you need to know.

Shopping without an appointment

From Monday onwards, most retail outlets will be open and you will not have to book an appointment in order to nip in and get what you need.

Many retailers offered click and collect services and shopping by appointment from last Monday, but the further 'mass reopening' on Monday is being seen as a return to normality for shopping outlets.

Safety measures

Public health and social distancing measures will still be in place and numbers in shops will be limited, which means you will likely have to queue depending on what time you head into the shops.

Click and Collect shopping will also remain as an option for people who don't want to spend too long in the shops, with many retail stores such as Marks and Spencers and Ikea offering the service to consumers.

Dundrum Shopping Centre have also launched a brand new 'footfall counter' so consumers will be able to see how many people are in the shopping centre at any one time- so you can plan your trip around peak times.

Extended opening hours

Other changes will see many stores adopt extended opening hours to try and manage the demand a full re-opening will bring.

However, it was reported last week that some retail outlets are struggling to hire staff for their re-opening, so it looks likely only chain retail stores like Penneys will be able to open for longer.

The retailer saw over 250,000 appointments booked last week for their shopping by appointment system, and their opening hours will most likely see some stores remain open until at least 10pm.

Other retailers are expected to announce extended opening hours in the coming days.

Summer sales

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that stores will introduce summer sales when they re-open.

Due to being closed for most of this year, stores probably will not be able to afford to re-open and offer items at a discounted prices.

On top of that, it seems the demand will be there for clothes if Penneys is anything to go by, which means outlets will probably not need to introduce sales to attract customers.
