From nipple dresses to all-latex outfits, the Grammys were a masterclass in daring fashion

The Grammys is always one of the most fun nights in the awards calendar. None of the po-faced fashion of the Oscars – this night, which honours the best people making music in the industry, is about flair. Camp. High drama.

Given that tonight’s nominees included big name artists like Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter (none of whom are a slouch when it comes to putting together a killer look), the stage was set for a fashion spectacular.

The celebs who showed up last night did not disappoint. South African pop superstar Tyla kicked things off in a vintage dress from celeb fave label DSquared2, complete with an epic feather train – a look echoed by Lady Gaga, who had her own Black Swan moment in an all-feather Matières Fécales dress, as well as an epic Alexander McQueen moment during the ceremony itself.

Further down the red carpet, first-time nominee Zara Larsson appeared to make a single-handed case for the return of mermaid-core. The look in question? A bright yellow, midriff baring two piece top and skirt from Germanier. Full of sparkles – as was Joni Mitchell, who went full maximalist in a sequined suit, topped with a gold hat.

One of the stars of the night, Sabrina Carpenter – up for a whopping six Grammys – also found the time to joke with photographers on the red carpet in a fairy-tale inspired Valentino look comprising a wafting, beaded white dress with a white shoulder cape.

White was a theme of the night, it seemed: Addison Rae also rocked an all white Alaia look (likely the work of outgoing creative director Pieter Muller), though hers took the form of a fun, full-skirted dress with a neckline that plunged all the way to her midriff.

American hitmaker Kesha appeared at her first Grammys since 2018 in a shaggy, white Atelier Biser dress that looked like a snowfall – with no shoes on. And how could we forget the star of the moment, Olivia Dean, who showed up in custom Chanel featuring a gorgeous feathered waist that gave way to a gorgeous, full skirt.

It was the last word in romance. Topped only, arguably, by Chappell Roan’s evening-stealing dress. Does it still count as a dress if it’s just a bit of fabric held up by two nipple piercings? We’d say yes: the Thierry Mugler piece, based on the SS98 couture collection, came with a cape that she took off to reveal a whole load of decorative, presumably fake, tats, as well as some prosthetic nipples to hang the entire thing on.

It made a single-handed case for the naked dress – but if you needed any more sign that it’s well and truly back (if it ever went away), Hailey Bieber rocked up with husband Justin wearing a strapless Alaïa number (along with an ‘Ice Out’ badge) that happened to feature a completely sheer skirt. On the other side of the spectrum, Heidi Klum covered up and bared all at the same time in a super-moulded latex dress that featured a sculptured bum, belly button and... well, pretty much everything else, actually.

It wasn’t all super-formal. Lola Young made a return to the spotlight after taking some time out in a rather dapper-looking jumpsuit, styled with a tie and crisp white shirt – while rock singer Yungblud showed up with Sharon Osbourne, looking very on theme: that is, black leather trousers and a leopard fur stole draped over his leather jacket. Shirts? No, thank you.
