From Nickleback to low rise jeans, here are 10 things we all remember from 2002

We decided to take a look back at some memorable moments and trends from life back in 2002. It's hard to believe that it's been twenty years since these were relevant in our lives.

The noughties was a decade that witnessed numerous memorable trends from fashion combinations of belly tops and low rise jeans to the boys in green almost making it to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002.

Have a read of the most memorable moments from twenty years ago, from what watched on the big screen to what we named our babies and everything in between.

What we listened to

The Billboard top single of 2002 was Nickleback's 'How You Remind Me'. Other popular hits that year included Nelly and Kelly Rowland's 'Dilemma' and Eminem's 'Lose Yourself'.

What we watched

We watched with bated breath as Ireland drew against Spain in the knockout out stages of the World Cup in South Korea. The boys in green almost eliminated them from the running but unfortunately, the Spaniards advanced to the quarter-finals by winning 3-2 on penalties.

What we introduced

Euro coins and notes (stock) (Elizabeth Fernandez)

2002 was the year when we bid farewell to the dear Irish Punt and said hello to the Euro. Who can remember the transition period when you could pay in pounds and get your change back in Euro?

What we named our babies

According to the Central Statistics Office, the most popular baby boy name recorded in Ireland for 2002 was Jack while for girls it was Sarah.

What we played

Hands up if you wasted endless hours of your life playing The Sims on your desktop.

What was on the big screen

It's safe to say that Harry Potter dominated the movie industry during the '00s. In 2002, the second edition of the Harry Potter series 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' was released on our big screens.

What we bought

The first mobile phone with a built-in camera was released - the Sanyo SCP-5300. We would love to see the quality of pictures taken with it today.

What we wore

Low rise jeans were all the rage along with crop tops - Christina Aguilera embodied early noughties fashion trends. Thankfully this outfit combination has not reared its head (just yet!).

What we searched for

What we browsed for can tell us a lot about what was trending that year. In 2002, the most popular web searches of the year included Star Wars, Shakira and Spiderman.

What we ate

If your mother packed Lunchables in your school bag, you were truly loved. Nothing brings back stronger memories of primary school than the elite combination of mini crackers, ham and cheese.
