From Muff to Slutsend: Take a rude road trip around Ireland this summer

We’re all looking for a staycation that stands out from the crowd this summer.

Ditch the Instagram-worthy locations, because we have an alternative suggestion, Ireland's rudest road trip.

From a pint in Bastardstown to an evening on Willyrouge Island, create a trip that will be the envy of all your foul-mouthed friends.

Irish Parcels have compiled a list of the most memorable spots to capture a selfie this summer.

With millions of us looking to holiday closer to home this year, Ireland could welcome a record number of visitors. And with many tourists seeking out obscene place name signs to pose for a picture, these spots could become more popular than ever.

A spokesperson for Irish Parcels said that residents tend to view their unique place names as either a blessing or a curse.

They said: “Irish places have been given their names in a variety of different ways over the years, from historic settlements to community nicknames which have stuck.

“Some Irish homeowners will view where they live as a curse while other families will love it, but one thing is for certain – living in or near a town with a silly name certainly isn’t boring.

“Funny or rude road names are guaranteed to spark conversations.”

So, grab your funniest friends, and get ready to stop by these spots on a road trip that you’re sure to remember.

The rude Irish road trip mapped out (Irish Parcels)

Stop 1: Nobber

Derived from the Irish word “an Obair” ('the work'), Nobber can be found in County Meath, 24 miles south of Dundalk.

Stop 2: Ballsbridge

The historic village of Ballsbridge is located in the county of Dublin, named after the Ball family. This Dublin village is just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Stop 3: Slutsend

Situated close to The National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, the rudely named Slutsend is a must visit in County Dublin.

Stop 4: Fannystown

Fannystown is a small community in Wexford, close to Ireland’s beautiful south coast.

Stop 5: Horetown

Horetown is a small village situated in Wexford and boasts the beautiful Horetown Country House. Although the house is a luxury wedding destination, the village’s outrageous name secures its spot on this list.

Stop 6: Bastardstown

Yet another spot on the scenic south east coast of County Wexford with a rude place name, make sure you check out the beach at Bastardstown while you’re here.

Stop 7: Doodys Bottoms

Doodys Bottoms is a small community found in the heart of Donard, County Kerry. As well as having a memorable name, this townland has a holy well that’s been there long before St Patrick reached Ireland.

Stop 8: Cock Hill

Home to the picturesque Anna More Bog, Cock Hill is in County Kerry.

Stop 9: Spunkane

The neighbourhood of Spunkane can be found a few miles from Lough Currane in County Kerry.

Stop 10: Cum

There are three places in the world named Cum. The northernmost place is in the region Mayo in Ireland. They’re in good company, with places called Cum in Turkey, and in Nicaragua.

Stop 11: Willyrogue Island

A small island in stunning Lough Corrib in County Galway.

Stop 12: Muff

Last but certainly not least, finish off your trip in Muff, County Donegal. It is near the mouth of the River Foyle and sits close to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Settle down with a pint and think back on all the weird and wonderful placenames Ireland has to offer.
