From moving to the Quayside to 'San Siro' in Leazes Castle: Six other ambitious plans for St James' Park

Mothballed plans to create a 70,000 stadium on the site of St James' Park by turning the pitch by 90 degrees have created something of a buzz since architect John Henry shared never-before-seen images with ChronicleLive.

Henry's plan - which was drawn up to help persuade a consortium in the Middle East to invest - was to create commercial and residential opportunities as part of an ingenious plan to unlock the ground's potential.

And while he knows that it is "ambitious", he told us that it required a bit of vision to take the club to where it needs to go in terms of its stadium.

It is not the first time the club's ground has been the subject of ambitious plans. We trawled through the archives and found six eye-catching proposals which were not successful, including the proposal to move the club to Gosforth and even the Quayside.

The 1921 plan

Architect Archibald Leith's plan to raise four stands fell through - although parts of it were later adopted.

The Gosforth plan

In this plan United would have moved within the city.

There were ambitious plans to create a 63,000 stadium - 32,000 standing with 31,000 seats - in a move that would have seen the club share facilities with the University. It would have created a sporting complex with gym, restaurants and 5-a-side pitches.

Gordon McKeag's plan

An ambitious plan which ended up being adopted by the club when they did redevelop the stadium.

The City Arch plan

An eye-catching proposal from 1991 that did not get off the ground.

Moving the club to the Quayside

With controversy surrounding the club's official plans to move to Castle Leazes, an alternative plan was hatched to move the club to the Quayside. It made the local media and was presented to the club - but they were not interested.

The 1997 plan

Newcastle United were desperate to move to Castle Leazes in a move that would have seen the club in a San Siro-esque stadium . It was defeated by residents concerns.
