From Meltin' John to Grits n Pieces: Scotland's gritters have the best names

With winter on the horizon the gritters have been out in force over the last week as freezing temperatures hit Scotland.

And while most of us despair at the thought of a cold and frosty day, we can at least seek some solace knowing Scotland's gritters are the best.

Scotland Transerv and Traffic Scotland, together with some of the country's councils, have come up with the funniest and pun filled gritter names.

In a bid to brighten our mornings you are likely to see Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, Spready Salted and Meltin' John out on the roads.

Scotland's greatest sportsmen and superstars have also been immortalised with gritter's named after them - from Sir Andy Flurry and William Wall-ice.

Also among the elite is Sir Salter Scott, Ploughlo Grittini, Thawin' Batty and Spread Sheeran.

As revealed by the Daily Record earlier, this year's new edition is after global superstar, and Bathgate native, Lewis Capaldi.

The gritter is all set to do battle with Scotland’s winter on trunk roads up and down the country.

Traffic Scotland run a live trunk road gritter tracker which allows you to check the location of each vehicle and where they have previously been. This is live from today, Friday November 1.

You can follow it yourself here. In the meantime, watch our video above to see all the best gritter names from across Scotland.
