Who is Che Adams? Lowdown on Southampton striker and Nottingham Forest transfer target

Nottingham Forest could look to sign a striker during the January transfer window, and one name continues to be linked with a move to the City Ground.

Southampton striker Che Adams is reportedly on the Reds' radar ahead of the New Year, while have also been credited with an interest.

The Saints striker’s future looks to be up in the air at Southampton, having failed to score a goal since his £15m summer move from Birmingham City.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has recently spoken about Adams’ form and future at St Mary’s, but he is not the only one to talk about the striker.

So, what more do we know about him?

Early days

Adams was born in Leicester and started out playing for local side Highfield Rangers.

He was on the books at Coventry City as a youngster but did not make the grade with the Sky Blues.

Spells at Leicestershire sides St Andrews and Oadby Town followed after he was released by Coventry before being snapped up by Ilkeston in the summer of 2013.

Breaking through

Adams flourished at Ilkeston, making a big impression for the club's youth team and senior side.

An impressive start to the 2014-15 Northern Premier League campaign saw him score nine goals and provide 11 assists by the end of October.

At one stage, he was said to be watched by 45 scouts - and ended up joining Sheffield United in a "six-figure deal" in November 2014.

The Blades were in League One at the time and managed by former Forest striker Nigel Clough.

Adams' first goals for the club came in the League Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

He went on to make 55 appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring 15 goals, before leaving Bramall Lane for Birmingham City in the summer of 2016.

Making his mark

Birmingham reportedly paid around £2m for Adams and he would go on to score 38 goals in 123 games for Blues.

It was last season, 2018-19, when the former England Under-20 international really made his mark.

Adams netted 22 goals during the campaign and was nominated for EFL player of the year.

He was also voted Birmingham's player of the year by both the fans and his team-mates.

Stepping up

Birmingham were said to have turned down bids from the like of Derby County and Fulham for Adams.

But when Southampton came calling this summer with a bid of around £15m, he was on his way.

Adams signed a five-year contract at St Mary's but has struggled to find his feet as yet in the Premier League.

Southampton have struggled as a team and Adams has started only six league matches so far.

He has made 14 appearances in all competitions for Saints and is still awaiting his first goal.
