From Homebush to Hillston: Olympic flagpole finds new lease on life on farm

The flagpole now stands tall above the Dalton family farm.

The pole used to hoist the Australian flag during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics has found a new home in a field on the New South Wales Riverina.

Since its starring role, the 21-metre flagpole had been storage in the attic of a Sydney-based flag-making company.

It has now found itself in the care of Sheldon and Rebecca Dalton, who had talked about installing "something big" on their farm, 25 kilometres south of Hillston, for years.

"My wife, she's come up with all sorts of ideas, and each time she says something, I think, 'Oh no, I don't know about doing that one'," Mr Dalton said.

Earlier this year the flagpole was agreed upon.

"I always thought I'd just make it myself, but I don't have enough time for that," Mr Dalton said.

"I googled flagpole makers, got this company in Sydney and put in an enquiry.

"I explained the situation and that I wanted to make a bit of a statement along the highway.

"[The owner] rang back and left a message and said, 'Sheldon, I have the very thing that could interest you'."

A landmark for highway drivers

The Daltons bought the flagpole and this week it was installed on their farm, ready in time for the 20th anniversary of the opening ceremony.

"We're very excited about it. As soon as we heard that's what it was, it was like, 'Wow, this is perfect for this spot'," Mr Dalton said.

A six-by-three-metre Australian flag now flies from the flagpole and can be seen by drivers on the Kidman Way.

A special plaque also adorns the pole, recognising its significance.

Mr Dalton said he hoped it would make people feel pride in Australia.

"We feel like we've brought this flagpole back to life again."
