From despair to elation in 15 minutes - Newcastle stay out of the drop zone after Villa revival

Newcastle United spent a nervous 15 minutes in the relegation zone as Fulham threatened to make it a miserable Easter weekend on Tyneside.

But while the Magpies partially managed their side of the bargain at St James' Park with a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, Toon fans were left cheering on Aston Villa against the Cottagers.

And for a while it looked like Newcastle were going to spend a week in the relegation zone for the first time since September 2019.

United old boy Aleksandar Mitrović had put Fulham ahead before a Villa fight back in the last 12 minutes of the match in the second city as Ollie Watkins and Trézéguet (2) secured three points for Steve Bruce's old side.

Despite Fulham's defeat - and their goal difference taking a dent - Newcastle face another nervous night on Friday.

Scott Parker's men face Wolves at home on Friday evening and again could leapfrog United into 17th place.

That coud mean the Magpies kick off at Burnley for the midday clash at Turf Moor in the relegation zone.

However, for now, United can breathe a sigh of relief after an energy-draining afternoon in the Premier League.
