From Cafés To Cocktails: This Docuseries Goes Into The Heart Of Sydney’s Hospo Scene
The past few years have been a real struggle. Young people have felt the icy grip of a loneliness epidemic, while small businesses have struggled to stay afloat. It’s almost like there was a global pandemic or something that shut down businesses and isolated everyone.
Luckily, the answer to this may lie in the everyday community builders dotted across every Aussie suburb: our local hospo spots.
It’s something I can attest to. Having only recently left the hospo world, after working in just about every bar and café in Fitzroy, the thing I noticed most of all — more than the crazy step counts or weekend hours — is the sense of community it created.
A brand-new docuseries is exploring just that, zooming in on distinct Sydney neighbourhoods and the small-businesses keeping their community alive.
Good Neighbours, a series by Square, sees Sydney Chef Joel Bennetts head into different Sydney suburbs to chat with local hospitality venues so you can find the hidden gems right around the corner, serving up everything from late-night hot spots to family-run cafés.
So, if you’re a foodie, a Sydney local, or maybe someone like me who’s looking for a spot to build a bit of community, then keep reading, ‘cos this series is for you.
What’s the series about?
The show is a walk and talk through Sydney suburbs, with Joel chatting with the chefs and owners, giving us the chance to peek behind the curtain and see what makes them tick.
Think Anthony Bourdain but with an Aussie twang.
Checking out a range of spots powered by Square, Joel sits down with the owners and icons of these little communities and asks the big questions: what inspired you to do this? Do you feel supported by your neighbourhood? And what’s the ‘everything’ on an everything bagel?
You’ll be whisked away into memories of childhood, technical baking breakthroughs, and all the people who make these places possible, driving home the message that being a good neighbour sometimes just means turning up.
Where does it head?
The Uber budget must’ve been big for this one.
As any Sydneysider would know, getting across the city is no small feat, making it especially impressive that this series manages to head every which way.
From a bagel in Bondi to some salami in Potts Point and maybe a quiet cocktail (or two) in Newtown, the series jumps all over the map, each of the three episodes exploring a different area: Inner Sydney, Bondi Beach, and Inner West.
Where can I watch it?
Don’t stress, you don’t need yet another streaming service to watch it.
You can check out Good Neighbours here, with all the episodes already up and running on Square’s website, so lucky you, there’s no need to wait to binge the series.
Use it to plan your next weekend in Sydney or as a reminder to get out there and build some connections for yourself, because, between Square and some of the world’s best chefs, we really are spoilt for choice.
